Monthly webinar: 'All about change: One day or day one. Let's decide' presented by Kirsten Holt

In the turmoil of the pandemic, how many of us have taken a moment to reflect on what’s changed in our teaching practice?

Are the techniques and activities we used pre-Covid still relevant for the teaching or training context we’re now in? This interactive workshop will take you through key changes identified through extensive research and case studies to evaluate what’s new in ELT, and should stay – for ourselves, our teaching and our industry.

During the session you will be taken through a whistle-stop tour of techniques and ideas that have developed in recent years or are changes preceded by pandemic that are likely to remain in the teaching of tomorrow, such as replacing nativeness, improving language skills and teaching knowledge on the job, evidence-based teaching, teaching (live) online classroom techniques and working with emergent language.

Each area will contain a practical activity to give you an overview to understand its ramifications for today’s teaching whilst putting it into context and then to help you see how it might work in your own teaching or training practices, and the real world.

Whilst everyone is welcome to attend this professional development event, free of charge, certificates of attendance and access to the recording will only be provided to IATEFL members., after the event, via their member dashboard.

Presenter: Kirsten Holt

Kirsten Holt is the Head of Pavilion ELT at Pavilion Publishing, having been involved in the ELT industry in many guises for the past 30 odd years – as a teacher and materials writer, teacher trainer, trainer of teacher trainers, school manager, editor and then publisher. Kirsten is passionate about supporting teachers, teacher trainers, authors and editors in their continuing professional development throughout their careers and has enjoyed watching the people she has mentored over the years go on to flourish in their chosen path. She believes that learning never stops – especially when we respond to the evolving needs of language teaching – so encourages experiential learning, self-reflection of our own teaching/teacher training practice, and the sharing/exchanging of teaching experiences, research and ideas, with constructive discussion. Kirsten is looking forward to discussing what’s new in ELT with you, and evaluating what should stay – for ourselves, our teaching and our industry.

YLTSIG Webconference: Better Together

Join IATEFL Young Learners and Teenagers SIG for their, three day webconference which will focus this year on the themes of communication, collaboration and cooperation. Organised in three strands:

Better together in the classroom
Better together in the staffroom
Better together in the world

With talks and inspire sessions along with social events, debates, panel discussions and some fantastic plenary speakers, this is an event not to be missed.

YLTSIG mini course A: Assessment as learning for young learners and teenagers (TROIKA)

Providing students with constant and effective feedback and support has proven to be an important factor to contribute to their academic, social, and emotional needs. In this mini-course, we will reflect on some principles of classroom assessment; the ideas of assessment of and for learning, and the need for a paradigm shift – from a punitive to an empathetic, constructive way of assessing. We will also discuss the specific needs of primary and secondary learners when it comes to assessment, as opposed to those of adults.

YLTSIG mini course B: Inside learners minds: Visible thinking in the YLT classroom (SYMMETRY)

Visible Thinking, a research-based conceptual framework, makes extensive use of learning routines rich in thinking. These routines scaffold and support development of learners’ thinking and help make their thinking visible. In this practical mini-course, participants will be guided through the core thinking routines and explore a variety of ways in which they can be used in the YLT classroom.

Over three, two hour sessions, the following topics will be covered:

Day 1 - fun with festivals in the primary classroom
Day 2 - making the most of music in the pre-primary and primary ELT classrooms
Day 3 - starting out with sustainable development goals in pre-primary and primary ELT classes

Weekend Workshop: Implementing a CEFR action-orientated approach in Business English

A Business English SIG workshop presented by Randi Harlev and Debbi Lahav

In this workshop, we will introduce the principles of an action-oriented approach to transition from teaching of English from the perspective of EAP to that of English for the Purposes of International Communication and will present a possible framework as it is being applied to business English courses at an institution in Israel. Participants will have an opportunity to plan an action-oriented unit of study suitable to their teaching, coaching, or consulting context. During the workshop, participants will share their plans, insights, and challenges, enabling all of us to gain a better understanding of how an action-oriented approach can be implemented in practice.
