Beyond the Accent: Building Intelligibility and Confidence in ELF Pronunciation

An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Mirela Cristina Manea Gultekin

This webinar reimagines pronunciation teaching in the age of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). We may need to move beyond the pursuit of a "perfect" accent, prioritizing clear and effective communication for a global audience, considering learners coming from different backgrounds. While some activities, like minimal pairs, might be familiar (Derwing & Munro, 2005), we'll explore how to use them to foster peer feedback and celebrate diverse accents within an ELF framework, aligning with the need for more inclusive pronunciation practices. The session introduces the "CLEAR" framework, guiding teachers to prioritize Communication, Listening Exposure, Engaging Activities, Assessment for Progress, and a Respectful Environment - fostering a supportive space where learners feel empowered to practice and achieve fluency.

The session also presents research conducted in an Intensive English Program, findings, and further recommendations for better practice. Finally, the session emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing diverse accents in English as a lingua franca, promoting mutual understanding and respect among speakers of different first languages.
