Minicourse B: The Joy of Reading!

As part of the ‘Each Child, Every Child, and the Whole Child: IATEFL YLTSIG Web conference 2024’ event, YLTSIG is again offering three different minicourses for teachers around the world. The courses are 6 hours long, comprised of 3 sessions of two hours each.

Check the time of this event in your location here.

Minicourse B: The Joy of Reading! is being facilitated by IATEFL YLTSIG committee.

Abstract:
Reading is one of the best ways to learn a new language, acquire an extensive vocabulary and a range of natural idiomatic language structures. However, teachers around the world often complain that young learners and teenagers are reading less and less. Is this true, and if so, how can we engage our learners with the joy of reading (and help improve their English as a result!)?

Day 1:
Michelle will discuss the importance of selecting engaging reading materials in order to foster a love of reading through the natural curiosity that Primary learners have about the world. Using a selection of reading materials (fiction and nonfiction), she’ll explore the different purposes of reading and look at how we can design activities that exploit the text without taking over.

Day 2:
Elizabeth will introduce ways of working with graded readers in the YL ELT classroom - a super way to engage students in meaningful, age-appropriate content which can spark a love of reading. She will explore how these specifically designed books can cater to both linguistic and cognitive needs of young learners, as well as incorporating cultural and moral values enriching the educational experience, and empowering teachers to differentiate instruction.

Day 3:
Laura will look at ways to introduce Secondary learners to authentic texts in various formats including poetry and graphic novels, exploiting their motivational power and ability to be a vehicle for looking at real-world issues teens are facing today. She will also explore with you the ways to promote extensive reading with (often reluctant to read) teenagers.

Speakers: Elizabeth Evans Cicconi, Laura McWilliams and Michelle Worgan

Elizabeth Evans Cicconi is originally from Glasgow, Scotland but she has been living in Italy since 1984 where she has been teaching English, freelance, to all levels and types of students since 1986. In 2001 she began writing materials for an ELT publisher in her area, concentrating on Young Learners and Teens. Since 2005, Elizabeth has been training Italian Primary school teachers all over Italy, delivering workshops and language improvement courses, many of which include CLIL methodology and Storytelling. Her main interests revolve around teaching natural, useful language and using the latest technologies whenever necessary and possible. She opened her own school in January 2020, together with her son and daughter who were both teaching for other private language schools and decided to join her in the adventure.

Laura McWilliams volunteers as coordinator of the IATEFL Young Learner and Teenagers Special Interest Group to support the global YL ELT community. She is an Academic Manager based in Egypt, and has previously worked in the United Kingdom and France. She is both a Cambridge DELTA and TYLEC tutor, and has presented at numerous international conferences.  She is an avid reader, and her background also includes professional theatre. She brings these interests into her classroom practice along with a focus on 21st century skills and diversity and inclusion.

Michelle Worgan is a primary materials writer based in Spain. She creates and develops materials based on her extensive classroom experience and has worked on varied projects for international publishers. She is particularly interested in bridging the gap between ELT and mainstream educational materials and methodologies, with a special interest in learner-centred approaches. She designs and runs teacher development courses and resources for inquiry-based learning in ELT and frequently gives workshops and webinars to support young learner teachers with their skills. She’s also joint events coordinator for the IATEFL YLTSIG and president of TEFL del Sur, a local teacher’s association.
