This interactive webinar presents evidence from neuroscience supporting haptic pronunciation teaching (HaPT) and an “experiential” demonstration of key features (involving gesture and touch) of the system. HaPT is not a method, per se, but an embodied approach to classroom engagement, a set of movement/ gesture/touch strategies for modeling, feedback and correction that can be applied with any learner population and in any teaching context. As such, it serves simply as an overlay, an organizing heuristic for pronunciation instruction, but especially work with learners of beginning through intermediate English proficiency.

Optimal participation in the webinar requires a tablet or laptop screen size of at least 20x20 cm, positioned at eye level while standing, about 2 meters away. Casual clothing and moderate ego permeability recommended.

William Acton is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of the MA TESOL at Trinity Western University. His research and publications have been in the general area of the role of embodiment in second language learning and haptic pronunciation teaching. (hipoeces.blogspot.com).

Amanda Baker is Senior Lecturer in TESOL at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Her research interests focus on the dynamic relationships that exist between second language (L2) teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, and practices, especially in the areas of L2 pronunciation, speaking and listening pedagogy.

Michael Burri is a Senior Lecturer in TESOL in the School of Education at the University of Wollongong, Australia. His professional interests include pronunciation teaching, teacher education, neuroscience, context-sensitive/innovative pedagogy, and non-native English-speaking teacher issues.
