So… let’s debate!
An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Tanya Livarda
According to American Debate League, a debate is “an organised argument or contest of ideas in which the participants discuss a topic from two opposing sides”. In other words, you divide your students into two groups, you give them a statement and each group has to take sides. It is also evident that more and more teachers neglect or are afraid to organize debates as they believe that they are a waste of time or they do not see the value behind it.
The main purpose of this webinar is to provide our colleagues with theoretical and practical knowledge regarding what debates are, how they can be used in the classroom, and why both students and teachers can benefit from these. I will also present the key steps that one needs to follow, should they wish to create a debate club, as well as some key materials and activities that are useful during the debate classes.
