Developing Visual and Linguistic Competencies in ELT through Art

An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Kenia Santos

In our daily lives, we're surrounded by images, using them to understand our changing world (Mirzoeff, 2016). In Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), educators have long used images for various purposes, such as writing prompts and conversation starters (Donaghy & Xerri, 2017). Yet, technological advances have transformed our interaction with images (Apkon, 2014), prompting a need for new perspectives.

This webinar session aims to introduce participants with the basic competencies of the Common European Framework of Reference for Visual Competency (2020) and strategies to foster the development of observation skills, empathy, curiosity, critical thinking and love of learning, in tandem with the development of language skills specifically through the exploration of artworks.
