PRONSIG: Metalanguage Knowledge: A Closer Look at Teachers' Knowledge Base of L2 Pronunciation Teaching
This webinar presents the results of an investigation on L2 pronunciation teachers’ metalanguage knowledge—that is, knowledge of the linguistic systems of a language.
The study uncovered how teachers simplify their metalanguage knowledge into more accessible pronunciation content for learners, and how their metalanguage use shapes the language available to learners in pronunciation instruction. The study showcases how training and previous experience help teachers shape their knowledge of pronunciation content into practical techniques to raise awareness of L2 features based on learners’ pronunciation needs. These results are discussed in terms of implications for teacher training in L2 pronunciation pedagogy.
Speaker:
Joshua Gordon is an Associate Professor of TESOL and Applied Linguistics at the University of Northern Iowa. His research interests include L2 pronunciation teaching and learning, and L2 teacher cognition.
