Integrating Social-Emotional Learning into language teaching and learning

An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Daniel Tse

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) as a method is gaining popularity in the education industry. This method, which began life in the 1960s, adopts a holistic view of learners skills development in the classroom and beyond. In the world of English Language Teaching (ELT), how can teachers integrate SEL into their own teaching and learning contexts?
In this webinar, we shall use the CASEL framework as the basis for exploring different ways in which teachers can incorporate SEL in language classrooms. By reflecting on my teaching experience, I aim to illustrate how certain elements of SEL are already embedded in our current practice in ELT.
In linking practice to theory, we shall also explore various classroom activities, teaching techniques, and ideas for lesson planning. These represent practical tools that teachers can readily apply in their classroom contexts should they wish to promote each of the five SEL competencies: relationship skills, self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making.
