LTSIG Open Forum

The main aims of the event are to

  1. Present the mission, recent activity, strategic and action plans of the IATEFL LTSIG
  2. Engage all participants in productive discussion in order to
    - Become aware of the LTSIG members’ professional strengths, challenges, and needs
    - Give the LTSIG members the opportunity to evaluate the quality of the PD offered by the SIG
    - Outline LTSIG members’ modus discendi preferences
  3. Offer three experts’ points of view on the theme / topics of discussion

Speakers:

Gabriel Díaz Maggioli

Dr. Gabriel Díaz Maggioli is a teacher who applies the lessons learned in the classroom to his roles as a teacher educator, researcher, and author. He is currently Advisor to the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay where he also directs the Post-Graduate Diploma in English Language Teaching. He is also a Tier 1 researcher in Uruguay’s National Researchers’ Roster in the National Agency of Research and Innovation. He was the first Latinx scholar to be elected president of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL).

Sophia Mavridi

Sophia Mavridi is a senior lecturer in educational technology and TESOL at De Montfort University, UK, where she teaches on the master’s in ELT programme and leads the digital strategy for the Centre for English Language Learning. She is also a teacher educator with extensive experience working with major organisations such as the British Council, NILE, and the Bell Foundation. Her publications, including Language Teaching Experiences during COVID-19 (British Council) and English for 21st Century Skills (Express Publishing), reflect her dedication to innovative pedagogies in language education. She was the coordinator of the LTSIG for six years and holds a deep appreciation and fondness for this community. She is an advocate of bridging research and practice so that teaching is evidence-based, and research reflects classroom realities. Her current research explores students’ experiences with AI-assisted writing in L2 contexts.

George Palomino

George Palomino is an Assistant Lecturer in Education at Marino Institute of Education, Ireland, specialising in English for Academic Purposes. He holds an MSc in TESOL, the Trinity DipTESOL, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. As a Fellow of Advance HE and a member of the Association for Learning Technology, George delivers both in-person and online courses, and provides training in teacher development and technology-enhanced learning. He is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education (EdD) with a focus on Digital Technologies at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
