How do we teachers react to student feedback?
An IATEFL monthly webinar presented by Ana Paula Biazon Rocha
Feedback, understood as a response to performance (Hattie & Timperley, 2007), is essential in language education. Teachers should give constructive feedback to support student learning, but it is also vital to encourage and train students to provide feedback to teachers (Zierer & Wisniewski, 2019). Student feedback can serve as an important resource for teachers to identify hidden assumptions in their teaching methods and evaluate their effectiveness on students (Brookfield, 2017).
Within ELT, discussion is usually centred on how to provide, support and have students benefit from feedback. However, the other way round is also valid: how do we teachers react to student feedback? How prepared are we for it? How helpful can it be? Should we disregard it when it is unclear or does not meet our expectations?
This reflection is paramount for professional development and can relate to different teachers in different teaching contexts.
In this webinar, we will reflect on and consider our methods for managing student feedback, making suggestions for best practices and will highlight common pitfalls to avoid when reacting to student feedback.
